Southridge Hands-on-Lab

Southridge is an extensive hands-on-lab for WPF developers. The six-part lab includes the following sections:
  1. Fundamentals
  2. Custom Controls
  3. Styling
  4. Ribbon
  5. DataGrid
  6. Databinding

Download the Southridge lab on the WPF Futures page.

Please note that in order to use the Ribbon sections of this lab, you must install the RibbonControlsLibrary.dll from the Office UI Licensing Site using the instructions on this page. Due to licensing requirements, RibbonControlsLibrary.dll is not included with the Southridge lab's zip file and must be downloaded separately.

Looks like the Southridge sample application hasn't been updated in over 3 years. Why would you say "go here and download this sample" when you can't even use it because it uses old versions of the RibbonControl library that aren't compatable with the the WPF4 version?? That's ridculous. Is MS so lazy that they can't update the samples, or create new ones?

I'm sorry, but not even 1 lab project is working. It can't find assemblies, has some other errors, etc. In manuals there are lots of differences with real code, included with labs. I don't know how to use it. The Idea of labs is very good, but impelementation....

Hi, I am getting the following XAML Parser error in both labs 3 and 4. Anybody have an idea?

Cannot create instance of 'Ribbon' defined in assembly 'RibbonControlsLibrary, Version=3.5.31016.1, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35'. Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. Error at object 'System.Windows.Controls.Grid' in markup file 'Southridge;component/window1.xaml' Line 478 Position 6.

I have worked through to the DataGrid. When I get to the first time it say run the application I get no data like the instructions say I should. Solution 1 also does not show any data. Solution 2 crashes. The data is in the .sdf file because I can get to it with Visual Studio. How do I get to the data?

I fixed all the references. But the database doesn't work. I tried everything I can think of. This project is worse than useless: -10

A follow-up to my previous comment. This lab is a mess; it is littered with typos and misplaced references (example: At page 15, Task 3 says "In task 2 we will..."), which make it extremely difficult to follow. It needs to be withdrawn and given a thorough edit.

Needs clean-up work. I found a number of errors in the first ten pages of Lab 1. For example, see page 8, Fig. 5. Text and screen shot contradict each other, and quoted XAML is apparently from Lab1Starter.xaml, a file not included in the source code.

Thanks Samantha - this has some great examples included.
