How do you take some xaml and wrap it on a sphere?

I have been looking at an example that does some 3d texturing of a bitmap onto tessellated sphere.

There must be a way to map the 2d xaml elements onto 3d, but I haven't found it yet.  In fact, I watched a channel 9 episode that looked like it did that.  And I downloaded the code. 

Anybody got some clues for a simpler example?  I want to just take some basic shapes and then wrap them around the sphere.
