Build Toolkit Locally

I'm trying to build the toolkit locally, and add a reference to that (so I can make changes later).  For some reason when I add a DatePicker to my window, the calendar popup shows Jan 1 0001 as the default date.  Here's what I did:

Unzipped the project - and built it

Add a reference to the dlls in the debug folder

Added a reeference in XAML like this: xmlns:toolkit="http://schemas.microsoft.com/wpf/2008/toolkit"

I'm guessing it's the third step that's srewing it up.  Do I need to add my reference differently?  Is the local copy somehow conflicting with what's in the GAC?

If anyone sees this question, please ignore it, and feel free to come to OKC and give me a flogging for asking it.
